NEW YEAR NEW CHALLENGES

There is great excitement in the air as the start of the Gunn Girls 2008 Tennis Season approaches. Coach Jim Gorman returns to lead the Varsity, and Coach Tony Moy to lead the Junior Varsity. So many positive changes have happened during the past year with Gunn Tennis. The Varsity team struggled at times during last season, but came through in 5^th place in the De Anza division. The JV team, also did well last season. With the loss of only three Seniors to graduation, the high level of competitive tennis played by returning players at both the Varsity and the JV levels, and some strong additions from the incoming Freshman class, the stage is set for Gunn to make a major impact in the De Anza League this year and for years to come.

Monday Aug 18^that Noon All week tryouts for Varsity singles and doubles ONLY with all paper work in!

You must e-mail Coach Gorman if you are interested in singles, there are 4 singles spots open. And three returning singles players, I am hoping to see 6-8 players trying out for singles. (Be ready to play challenge matches on Monday thru Friday). Returning Varsity singles players Alana Booth, Constance Wu and Julia Saper and others will be there! And two incoming freshman will be challenging in. Please come out to watch the matches!

Friday Aug 22^nd Parents meeting and player Pre-season pizza party 5pm @ the tennis courts

Bring a dish and drinks to share, Coach Gorman will bring Pizza

Monday Aug 25^th Practice 9 am – noon All players and All JV starters from last year

Should be at the courts ready to play with all paperwork in! Please come out in the morning to watch our team to help you get an idea of the level of competition.

Aug 26^th thru the end of the season

Practice 3:30 to 5pm Monday thru Friday at the Gunn Courts. Practice is mandatory and is rain or shine. Bring your jump rope and water bottle. Remember we have no cups!

Saturday August 30^th and September 6^th will be challenge matches all day 9am to dark, times TBA

Varsity tournament on September 12 and 13^th Friday and Saturday, we leave after practice Thursday the 11^th California High School Girls Tennis Classic in Fresno. We are taking two teams to this varsity tournament, which will include our top 24 players. The cost will be $250 per player, check made to Gunn Sports boosters / girls tennis. This will give you a tax deduction. I also need parent chaperones with big cars to shuttle kids and make this whole thing work. Players can not drive. One of the major contributing factors in the success of Gunn Tennis last year was the support and involvement of parents. All of the most successful local high school tennis programs have active and generous parents behind them. As the result of parent gifts and time last year, important improvements were made to the Gunn facilities – the first such improvements in many, many years. So much more needs to be done. With your help, we will provide an environment for a new era of winning tennis at Gunn. Please be ready to help when you are asked.
